This is the first installment of HomeTown Heroes…a section for people in the Southeast Michigan area that are pursuing their dream as musicians. This first section focuses on one person who I knew a long time ago, and she still is succeeding and doing what she loves. Music.
I last saw Alex Winston about two years ago in Ferndale. I went to coffee shop show she had in town with my sister and really enjoyed the entire performance. It wasn’t just an “I know her” kind of enjoyment, but really a respect for her talent, as well as those who surround her musically. It was amazing that after the show, while my sister and I were incognito in the back of the shop, Alex actually recognized me. Let me explain why this is so cool. I hadn’t seen here since 8th grade. I was a Junior in college at the time. 6 years had past and a lot of touring on her part and she was still able to remember people. God knows my memory has been shot for 2 years already, so it was impressive. But, back to the music. She has a very cool rock sound infused with pop vocal melodies that from the first song on her album to the last are present but not overbearing. With her new song on her MySpace it shows she moving forward with her songs, and I wish her the best. She’s as talented as she is kind and I hope everyone in Michigan supports her.
Oh yea, and she opened for the Nug…so she rocks hard
