Interpol Solo Work

So there has been some cool stuff going on in the past week with music.  I will be posting a bunch of stuff today so stay tuned.  I wasn’t one of the lucky ones who could afford going to Lollapalooza, but I’m sure Matt will have a round up of it when he gets back.

But now, Interpol.  Their lead signer is apparently venturing off into the solo world, and he has recruited Emily Haines for his frist video.  Emily Haines is the lead signer of Metric, she’s also in Broken Social Scene, and she also is a Babe for her age.

Here’s the video:

It’s a pretty awesome song. I’m not really a fan of Interpol because they have that classic Indie sound that I don’t really dig anymore. Though, this doesn’t sound much like Interpol which is pretty awesome.

Vinyl Obsession

So for the past year I have been on a vinyl kick.  Problem is I had no money to buy them.  That has changed a little since I have a job now.  I just made a large pickup.  Listening to a Vinyl is really quite fun and different then an mp3.  I put an LP on and just sit and listen.  No skipping of songs, none of that.  I listen to the whole LP.  It’s really organic and awesome.  On top of that, it’s something tangible.  I can lose my whole music collection in a second.  That’s depressing because if it happened, I would most likely forget to re download some of my favorites and I might forget about them forever.  I decided to change that a little.  I want tangible LP’s for some of my favorite records so I can remember what I liked when I was young and so I can pass them on to my kids.  I wish my dad had a record collection that he could pass onto me, but he doesn’t :-( .

Here are my Pickups:

1. Piacresque – The Decemberists

2. Castaways and Cutouts – The Decemberists

3. The Hazards of Love – The Decemberists

4. The Crane Wife – The Decemberists

5. Oracular Spectacular – MGMT

6. Vampire Weekend – Vampire Weekend

7. Salute Your Salution 7′ single – The Raconteurs

8. Furr – Blitzen Trapper

9. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix – Phoenix

10. Fantasies – Metric

11. Broken Boy Soldiers – The Raconteurs

12. Fleet Foxes – Fleet Foxes

Those are solid additions to my collection which consists of

1. Horehound – The Dead Weather

2. Continuum – John Mayer

3. Day and Age – The Killers

4. Hot Fuss – The Killers

5. In Rainbows – Radiohead

6. Try! – John Mayer Trio

7. Assorted singles.

Paying for music is hard on the wallet, but I’m not paying for the music.  I’m paying for something tangible to accompany the music which happens to sound better than any other format.

Fleet Foxes w/ Dungen Concert Review

I’m yet to find a person who doesn’t like the Fleet Foxes after listening to them. They are just a solid band with very talented members. Now, whether that band would put on a great live show is another question. Their music is extremely complex vocally, and also very chill which could mean a few interesting things for a live show. Here’s my experience/verdict on the show:

Kevin, Alexa, my cousin Ryan, and I headed down to Royal Oak at about 6:15. We stopped in at the Royal Oak brewery and grabbed some good bar food before heading to the show. I couldn’t help but think that this might be the most interesting concert experience I’ll ever have. Dungen is an awesome Swedish Psych-Rock group and Fleet Foxes are extremely chill cave men looking guys…A very interesting combination. Well, we rolled up to the theater at about 8:10 and there was a decent line. We thought the line wrapped around a couple blocks but it turns out it was for a bar right next door. Kevin, Alexa and I grab a spot right in the middle tier of the ROMT. If you haven’t been there, it’s like the Fillmore in Detroit. It goes Bar, steps, Standing area with a rail, stairs, standing area with a rail, then main floor. Pretty cool. So we grabbed a spot on the rail because we decided that a Fleet Foxes concert is on that doesn’t need to be appreciated from the first row. Though, we did have second thoughts because we thought Dungen was gonna put on a high energy awesome show…
Well Dungen came out at 9ish to an unenthusiastic applause. They opened by just jamming for a few minutes…It was awesome. Though I couldn’t help but be angered at the whole country of Canada after some dumb girls from Canada who I had been chatting with beforehand asked me if there were any words in a disgusted tone…I wanted to bitch slap her. Well, Dungen put on a great show, but it was definitely toned down…but that was to be expected. Fleet Foxes core fans as a whole wouldn’t appreciate in your face rock. They played a lot of Ta Det Lugnt (Panda, Ta Det Lungt, Du E För Fin För Mig and maybe one more.) It was rockin’, but again, I couldn’t help but be pissed at the unenthusiastic crowd around me. The floor seemed to be enjoying it, but the fucking Canucks were too busy thinking about Polar Bears ice skating while slurpin’ up some Coca-Cola in Montreal and they weren’t shameful about making sure everyone knew they weren’t into it. Long story short, Dungen was awesome!
Fleet Foxes came out at about 10:30. Let me just throw this out there…I’m normally in bed by 10:30 and Fleet Foxes are super chill…I found myself almost falling asleep a couple times throughout their set. But alas, they were freaking amazing live. The lead signer blew me away! His vocals were spot on! There’s really not much to say about the show…They played a few new songs which sounded very much like their old stuff, which is a good thing I guess. I couldn’t help but imagine how awesome it would be to see them outside at like 10 at night. Say Grant Park in Chicago. I could see myself just flopped out on a blanket and passing out listening to them.

All in all, it was a pretty sweet concert, though it’s not comparable to most shows I’ve seen. I’ve seen some folk groups before live, The Decemberists being the first to come to mind. They are so dominate live and I think it’s safe to say that the Fleet Foxes are as well.  Because of their strong performance, and because they played their music just about as good as you can live, I give them:

7/10

Some new Decemberists

So the Decemberists played some festival this past weekend and like Collin said via twitter, they played a couple new songs. I don’t know how many of you are die hard Decemberists fans, but I know Matt and I are, and Sam, as far as I know, used to love them but loathes their most recent Hazards of Love. What I’m getting at is, I think most of us fell in love with the Decemberists past work and nauticalesque theme. Well I think Collin got this Rock Opera out of his system. According to Pitchfork, the new songs are a return to form, which is AMAZING to hear. One is purportedly about a coal miner, which is quintessential Decemberists stuff. I can’t post the videos, but it’s all available via Pitchfork.

I don’t get it…Cool 3 stripes…Blueprint 3…Neat! It just hurts my eyes, but is kinda cool in a weird way…

The Fray Coming To MSU…F^CK

So to start off this school year with a bang (/s), ASMSU is bringing you the Fray for the highly inflated price of $35.50! WTF…I really would like to be apart of this group or something, because they bring a lot of garbage…Though they do bring a lot of awesome bands (KoL, Death Cab, Lil Wayne, OK Go, Wilco, and in years past: Muse, John Mayer and some others), they also bring a lot of shit…For those of you actually interested, go to this link and get all the info you need.

Eminem vs. Mariah Carey

Eminem straight dominates Mariah Carey in his new diss track. Apparently Mariah is denying they ever dated or some shit and she dissed him in her video by dressing like him or something…

Here are the lyrics to Slims song:
Only reason I dissed you in the first place is because you denied seeing me
Now I’m pissed off
Sit back and relax homey, kick back and relax, grab a six pack while I kick facts
Yeah Dre’s sick track, perfect way to get back
Wanna hear something wick wack?
I got the exact same tat that’s on Nick’s back
I’m obsessed now
Oh gee, is that supposed to be me in the video with the goatee
Wow Mariah, I didn’t expect her to go balls out
Bitch, shut the fuck up before I put all them phone calls out you made to my house when you was wild n out before Nick
When you was on my dick and give you somethin to smile about
How many times you fly to my house? Still trying to count
Better shut your lying mouth if you don’t want Nick finding out
You probably think cuz it’s been so long if i had something on you I woulda did it by now
On the contrary, Mary Poppins, I’m mixing our studio session down and sending it to mastering to make it loud
Enough dirt on you to murder you
This is what the fuck I do
Mariah, it ever occur to you that I still have pictures?
However you prefer to do and goes for you too, Nick, faggot
You think I’m scared of you?
You gonna ruin my career you better get one
Like I’ma sit and fight with you over some slut bitch cunt who made me put up with her psycho ass over 6 months and only spread her legs to let me hit once
Yeah, what you gonna say? I’m lucky? Tell the public that I was so ugly that you fucking had to be drunk to fuck me?
Second base? What the fuck you tell Nick, punk?
In the second week we was dry humping. It’s gotta count for something.
Listen, girly. Surely you don’t want me to talk about how I nutted early cos ejaculated early and bus all over your belly, and you almost started hurling and said I was gross, go get a towel you’re stomachs curling. Or maybe you do.
But if I’m embarrassing me, I’m embarrassing you and don’t you dare say it isn’t true.
As long as the song’s getting airplay I’m dissing you.
I’m a hair away from getting carried away and getting sued.
I was gonna stop at 16. This is 32. This is 34 bars. We ain’t even a third of the way through.
Damn, Slim. Mariah played you. Mariah who?
Oh did I say ”whore”, Nick? I meant a liar too.
Like I’ve been goin off on you all this time for no reason.
Girl you out ya alcholic mind. Check ya wine cellar. Look at all the amounts of wine.
Like I sit around and think about you all the time.
I just think this is funny when I pounce you on a rhyme.
But it now i’m about to draw the line.
And for you to cross it that’s a mountain that I doubt you wanna climb.

I can describe areas of your house that you wouldn’t find on an episode of Cribs
A blubba load ribs if I hear another word so don’t go opening your jibs cos every time you do it’s just another load of fibs
I ain’t saying this shit again, ho. You know what it is.
It’s a warning shot for before I blow up ya whole spot
Call my bluff and I’ll release every fucking thing I got
Including the voicemails right before you flipped your top
When me and Luis were tryin’ to stick two CD’s in the same spot
(Slim Shady I love you)
I love you too
Let me whisper sweet nothings into your ear, boo. Now what you say?
(It’s nothing)
Guess what I’ll do?
I’ll refresh your memory when you said ”I want you”
Now should I keep going or should we call truce?
(You think you’re cute, right? Hahaha)
You bet your sweet ass I do
(I’m Mary Poppins, b)
And I’m Superman, mmm
(Mary P. Slim Shady)
Comin’ at you
So if you’ll still be my (babygirl)
Then I’ll still be your (Superhero, Wilma M.)
Yeah, I’m right here
(You like this)
Nope. Not anymore, Dear.
It cuts like a (knife) when I tell ya get a (life)
But I’m movin on with mine
Nick, is that your (wife)
Well tell her to shut her mouth then I’ll leave her alone
If she don’t (sing this script?) then I’ma just keep goin
(I see Mary Ann. Mary Ann’s saying ”cut the tape, cut the tape”. Knife!)

I would post a link to the song, but I’m at work where it’s blocked. The music isn’t what’s important…It’s the lyrics that matter…It’s hilarious!

Let the Battle Begin!

P.S.
I hope she keeps talking shit because I wouldn’t mind Slim leaking the pictures he purportedly has…

Wait…This is why girls don’t like me?

My Lollapalooza News

This just in! I’m not going… And this isn’t some social protest about the lineup or how the festival has become commercially overrun with radio fans, its comes down to one very simple fact. I’m poor. Piss poor to be exact. I suddenly realizing what its like to be drowning in my own credit card debt due to purchases and concerts that were “must haves”. Meanwhile, I lack the complete ability to plan or conserve resources for when the true fun arises. To add onto this horrible, horrible realization, I’ve been discovering or coming upon bands that I like very much and would be interested to see in a live setting. So naturally, in this wonderful age of transparency and information, I travel through the interwebs to their respective MySpace pages to check for local touring dates…and to my surprise, Grant Park, Chicago August 7-9. It appears that nearly all of them will be attending and performing in the festival.
But enough with my crippling depression and horrible self-realizations, lets talk about you!  If you’re going to Lolla, I would love to see the pictures, watch the videos, and hear the stories of the most raging weekend in Chicago since the Great Fire.  Send me an email at mrferrel@gmail.com with the files attached and I’ll put them up on the blog to share with everyone.  Hope you all have fun, I’ll be wallowing at a cottage on Walloon Lake (insert sarcasm).

Some interesting news from Bloc Party

This got me slightly depressed, though it really shouldn’t because bands say this all the time…
